Much Needed Fence Cleanup at the Cemetery

While looking for locations where the armadillos were entering the cemetery, we realized that grapevines, poison ivy, and other brush were not just covering the north and east fences, but actually starting to damage the fence itself.

The board quickly decided that it was time to bring in a contractor to clear the fences as well as outside the fence all the way to our property lines. The four man crew started Wednesday, May 6 and worked every day until dark on Sunday, May 10. Not only did they clear the fences, they leveled the area between the fences and our property line so it could be mowed, cleaned up the dirt pile in the rear of the property, and even burned and buried all of the brush they removed. Here is some of the work in progress.

Some of the grapevines had grown over the wires in the fence and could not be removed.

The work is now completed and this is how the fencelines now look.

Unfortunately, now that the brush and vines have been removed the damage to the rear (east) fenceline is more obvious. Many of the metal posts and bars are bent and broken, and several of the concrete bases are cracked in two. To help stabilize the fence until repairs can be made, we were forced to install about a half dozen temporary T-Posts to keep the chain link mesh upright. We will be looking into the cost of repairing the rear fence and will communicate with the membership on this in August.

Membership dues and donations are the only way we could afford to do this project. It was expensive, the cost was equivalent to an entire years worth of dues from 50 members. Thanks to your support in 2019 we were able to do what needed to be done.

Please take time to visit the cemetery see how much has been accomplished, and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this special place.

Dillar Damage

Bradley Fuqua reported to the board that there is a significant amount of damage around the monuments where armadillos have been digging holes in search of grubs and other insects. Upon closer inspection we found numerous locations where the animals had dug under the perimeter fence to get into the cemetery. Billy Binford volunteered to set live traps, and has been successful in removing two of the offending armadillos. We will continue setting traps for a little longer, and will be clearing brush from the fences to make it easier to locate and seal their entry points

2020 Annual Membership Meeting Update

Our bylaws require an annual membership meeting the first Sunday in May. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the Association will be unable to conduct this meeting in-person. Our bylaws simply did not contemplate the scenario we are in today, so the Board has been required to develop an alternative proposal which we hope the membership will support even though it is not in strict compliance with our written bylaws.

First, the board is mailing a written update to the membership which will cover all the reports we would have provided at an in-person meeting. You should receive this letter before the end of April.

Second, we will conduct the vote for a board director by written mail -in ballot. Copies of the ballot will be included with the previously mentioned update. We already have one nominee, and will accept write-in votes for any other director nominee you wish to elect. Ballots may be returned by email or sent using regular mail. The nominee with the most votes received by Friday, May 15th will be elected for a 5 year term.

Third, the board will conduct two dial-in conference calls which will enable our membership to speak directly to the board and any other members on the call. One call will be at the normal time of the annual membership meeting on Sunday, May 3 at 3PM. The other will take place on Tuesday, May 5th at 8PM. Participation on either of these calls is optional, but if you would like to participate, here are the dial in instructions:

  • Dial the conference line at 713-231-5025
  • When prompted, enter conference number 55557#
  • At the next prompt enter PIN number 3871
  • You will then be asked to say your first and last name. After doing so, press 1 and you will be able to join the conference call. The system will automatically announce your recorded name to the rest of those on the call
  • In case of problems connecting, please call our regular number 936-727-2400 and leave your name and number. One of our board members will call you back immediately.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these challenging times. Stay safe.

2020 Annual Meeting Status

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we will not be able to conduct an in-person membership meeting on the first Sunday in May as we normally would. The board is discussing other options and will be communicating their decision later this month.

If you have not yet paid your 2019/2020 dues, its not too late. You may pay on-line by clicking the Donations/Dues option above, or by mailing your check to: Fuqua Family Cemetery, PO Box 619, Anderson, TX 77830.

Board Meeting Conference Call

The Board will be meeting by means of a conference call on Wednesday, January 15 at 6:30PM. A copy of the draft agenda is available by clicking on the link below. If you are a member and would like to participate on the call, please email us at board@fuquaerwincemetery.org and we will provide you with instructions for calling in.

New Cemetery Contact Information

The cemetery association now has a phone number for use in contacting the board of directors. The number is 936-727-2400. This number goes directly to a voicemail box, and the message you leave is automatically forwarded to all five of the board members. We wish to thank one of our members, Stephen Myers for donating this phone/voicemail service to the association.

We will also be adding to new sign to the front gate which will include this phone number as well as our website/email address.
